X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (2016) Trailer – Brand New X-Men In A Very Familiar Plot

Published by Shah Shahid on

After months of waiting, the ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Trailer has finally dropped, and it’s pretty good. Not great, good. Continuing the story from the last movie, ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’, (my Review here) Director Singer claims that this movie will be the culmination of all the other X-Men films (all the seven other) leading up to it. The film deals with the emergence of the world’s first mutant, and how the young mutants under Charles Xavier have to unite and fully become the team we all know and love, in order to try to defeat him.

Can I also say, that I’m so damn glad that this was the straight up 2-something minute Trailer, (although it’s more like an extended teaser) and not a 30 second logo flying teaser or some other annoyingly unsatisfactory thing. So here is the first Trailer for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ directed by Bryan Singer.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ sees the same main cast of characters who took over the previous X-Men films starting with ‘X-Men: First Class’, return once again after ‘X-Men: DOFP’, to continue their story in their own established Universe. This film also marks the introduction of a brand new cast of actors playing the same legendary comic book characters that we’d seen in the previous X-Men movies, like Jean Grey (played by Sansa Stark herself, Sophie Turner) and Cyclops, with a host of new characters as well. (Psylocke baby!)

And this guy too…

The Trailer shows us ‘the first mutant’ in Apocalypse, who seeks to kill all human or mutant kind or everyone maybe, so as to make the world stronger with the survivors. It’s not entirely clear, but he spouts the usual villanious thing about rising from ashes and all. It’s all too familiar. Isn’t this the same kind of Dogma that Ian McKellen’s Magento spewed in the original X-Men movies? And wasn’t this also the same plan that Kevin Bacon’s character had in ‘X-Men: First Class’?

What’s interesting is that Apocalypse has with him four hoursemen, to help him herald this apocalyptic end of the world (cuz, get it?) who seem to be Psylocke (played by the cute as hell Olivia Munn from ‘The Newsroom’), along with young new actors playing Storm and Angel, while Michael Fassbender’s Magneto seems to be the 4th Horseman. Given Magneto’s fickle, is-he-good-or-bad routine, this isn’t that surprising. Actually, this is pretty common, as good guys or grey characters often end up being one of Apocalypse’s horsemen in the comics, until they fight it become good again. Angel and Wolverine would be the most notable examples.

finally!

My over all impression of the Trailer isn’t that great. ‘X-Men: DOFP’ Trailer left more of an impact, while this seems to just to almost show the origins of Magneto’s own ‘kill everything and see’ approach that’s already been explored in this universe. Many times now. The character of Apocalypse himself will obviously bring something new with his original mutant status, but I’m hoping it’s going to give more insight into the world of Mutants and their history. Especially given the new young cast, I’m sure they want to continue their adventures beyond this movie, and an origin story to the evolution of Mutants in the human world should be set the stage for a lot more to come. I’ll be disappointed though if the story is just another world domination thing that we’ve already seen, enough of already, in my opinion.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ releases May 27th, 2016. Starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Olivia Munn, Rose Byrne, Oscar Isaac, Sophie Turner and Nicholas Hoult. And is directed by Bryan Singer.
