Trailer Talk: THE ESCAPE PLAN (2013)

Published by Shah Shahid on

For those not familliar with the “Trailer Talk” feature here at Blank Page Beatdown:

“Trailer Talk” is where I document my freak outs regarding upcoming films that I get super excited about. Or rip apart with my super critical bionic eye. It’s also an attempt to feature some films that may not get the attention they deserve prior to release, but movies definitely worth keeping an eye out for. Not the bionic one. Sometimes I make predictions, and we get to see if I’m right or wrong after the movie releases.”

I don’t know why this hasn’t happened before. Sure, THE EXPENDABLES Franchise has some screen time between Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sylvester Stallone, but these legendary icons haven’t done an actual movie together. That’s about to change in 2013 with THE ESCAPE PLAN.

The trailer begins with misdirection. We see Sylvester Stallone in a prison, narrating how to break out of it. Apparently this is his job. Breaking out of prisons, in order to assess their weaknesses and improve their security. However, the Trailer really begins when, during a consult for a specially designed prison, Sly gets kidnapped and put into that very same prison, from which there is no escape. He doesn’t know who or why did this to him. But he will find out. Over some dead bodies of course.

Once in this special hi-tech prison, Sly makes friends with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character, who decides to help him break out, in exchange for breaking out himself too. But it’s not all best friends and soapy showers as Arnie threatens to kill Sly if he fails. So Sylvestor Stallone has to break out of his crazy prison, uncover who set him up, while making an unfriendly alliance. It’s a simple set up and it looks pretty damn good, as far as gimmicky action movies go.

The montage of action sequences is pretty damn good. They could be better though. Guns, punches, screaming… it’s all pretty standard. There is a scene with Arnie & Sly trading punches, which should be awesome.

Arnold Shwarzenegger & Sylvester Stallone in The Escape Plan Movie 2013

Jim Caviezel in this as, what looks like, the antagonist, as well as 50 Cent playing the apparent ‘tech guy’. My biggest problem with this trailer, is that once again, this looks like a Sylvester Stallone movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it. That’s upsetting. I thought both these icons would get equal story significance. Unless of course there’s a twist in the end revealing that Arnie’s character had something to do with Sly’s kidnapping.

Only time will tell when THE ESCAPE PLAN releases on October 18th, 2013.

I’m pumped! Are you? Let me know in the comments below.

Hi Shah! I just saw this trailer in front of RED 2 last week and I must admit this looks preposterous but then again it’s Sly + Arnie so what do you expect, ahah. I’m curious to see Jim Caviezel in a villainous role though, so who knows, this could be fun 😀

I don’t know the screentime Caviezel has in this, given how the Trailer makes it look. I love the guy, but he’s gotta pick better movies. He’s JESUS CHRIST for crying out loud!

I suspect a plot twist though. OMG. I just figured it out while typing this!

SPOILER: Arnie’s character is the main villain who conspires to have Sly locked up with him, so he can help Arnie escape. Caviezel is a Red Herring!

Ahah, funny you mentioned his role as Christ. As he’s said in various interviews that his role in the Passion of the Christ actually cost him a lot of roles. As you know, a lot of ppl in Hollywood hated that film and Mel isn’t exactly well-loved in that community either.

It’s too bad as Caviezel is a great actor, I LOVE him in The Thin Red Line, Count of Monte Cristo, Frequency, etc.

He..he… you should be a screenwriter Shah! That’s a pretty darn good plot twist! 😀

Oh yea? I think I was ignorant of Industry reactions at the time. I remember the hype around PASSION… but didn’t know it garnered negative attention too. FYI: I love Mel Gibson too. Yea… that’s right!

I think I’ve inadvertently seen almost everything Caviezel’s done. Even that piece or rotting cow dung with J-Lo. Weird.

Why thank you. I am a screenwriter. Well was. Huh, can you ever stop being something you were never really paid for in the first place? 😐
I’m currently going through the whole season of PRISON BREAK… so my head is in that direction. 😉

Anyone remember Tango & Cash? I used to love that movie! Haha. Classic.

LOL. Awesome comparison. I loved movies like that from those days. THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT was another awesome buddy movie.
