Trailer Talk: September 2014 (Bollywood Edition)

Published by Shah Shahid on

This month’s Trailer Talk looks the most anticipated Bollywood movies of September 2014

MARY KOM (September 5th, 2014)

Kick starting the month with a biopic of a badass lady boxer is Priyanka Chopra in, and as Mary Kom. After last month’s MARDAANI, this is the 2nd film this year to showcase female empowerment in a physical manner, rather than with words and feelings. Women’s empowerment is a concept that should definitely be featured more by Indian Cinema and And hopefully is MARY KOM is as successful as Rani Mukjerji’s film, we just may see more of these ass kicking Desi ladies. This Trailer actually looks nowhere as cheesy as MARDAANI, but Chopra looks genuinely badass, and with a great soundtrack, it seems to focus on all the right elements of action, drama and emotional feels.

FINDING FANNY (September 19th, 2014)

Homi Adajania’s first film, BEING CYRUS was hilariously quirky featuring content and performances that were shocking to Bollywood sensibilities at the time. His next, more commercial project, was a disaster of epic proportions (Read my Review of COCKTAIL here). So it’s great to see the talented Director return to his Indie film roots with another oddball dram-edy. With a star cast of talented actors like newcomer Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and veteran oddballs from his first film, Dimple Kapadia &  Naseeruddin Shah with Pankaj Kapur along for the ride and Ranveer Singh in a short, but most likely memorable cameo, FINDING FANNY is a road trip comedy where Shah’s character seeks to find his long lost love, Fanny. Filmed entirely in English, FINDING FANNY is my most awaited movie of the month!

DR. CABBIE (Sept. 19th, 2014)

My very own local Bollywood hero, Vinay Virmani returns after some commendable high profile performances with a movie produced by Salman Khan himself. Featuring Hollywood actress Adrianne Palicki (of the downed Wonder Woman pilot), Virmani plays an Indian doctor who moves to America, only to find that his credentials mean nothing, and he has to drive a cab to make a living. Despite the typical fish out of water, Indian immigrant gimmick, the film looks fresh and funny enough to set itself apart from the rest. Doesn’t hurt having THE BIG BANG THEORY ‘s Kunal Nayyar cast as the comic relief either.

KHOOBSOORAT (September 19th, 2014)

Produced by Disney, this seems to be the first attempt to create a more family friendly, and hopefully girl-centric film in Bollywood. Packaged like a typical Disney Princess movie, this film has shades of THE PRINCES DIARIES or countless other similar ‘odd ball cute girl who falls into becoming a Princess’ style of films from Hollywood. Sonam Kapoor is the perfect choice to be, possibly the first Bollywood Princess, with her youthful energy and vibrant vibes, but I personally hope that KHOOBSURAT’s story goes beyond the superficial values that the trailer seems to imply, and has more than being pretty and landing a literal prince as its priorities. If so, this could be another commendable trend of films with good messages for impressionable young girls in South Asia.

DAWAAT-E-ISHQ (Sept. 19th, 2014)

Another Yash-Raj family blockbuster love story with Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur. While the film looks immensely fresh and cool, the Trailer fails to identify any sort of conflict between the lead pair. The trailer e hits all the right notes in setting up the characters, the initial problem, and even the fun song and dances near the end that will put the butts in seats, however, the 2nd half of the Trailer leads nowhere, as it shows scenes of them fighting, bickering and everything going to hell. Hopefully the story itself is crafted with a bit more thought and effort.

UGLY (Sept. 19th, 2014)

Prolific Director Anurag Kashyap’s UGLY has been long awaited by critics and fanboys alike. Getting much acclaim already well before it’s theatrical release, the buzz around this movie has been present for years. The very low key Trailer and marketing makes this movie not even on the radar of the general public, while causing the rest of us to drool with anticipation. A kidnapped girl, set into motion a chain of events that cause everyone to reveal their Ugly side. The film looks like an amazingly taut thriller of epic proportions.
