Trailer Talk: ROY (2015)

Published by Shah Shahid on

One of the more interesting Bollywood films of 2015 has started it’s marketing with release of multiple songs and videos, and it definitely looks like a movie to look out for in 2015. Check out the Trailer for ‘Roy’ below.

Initial reports of ‘Roy’ billed Ranbir Kapoor‘s appearance as a cameo, but the Trailer makes it clear that he has a full fledged role in the movie, despite being billed as being in a ‘dynamic role’ in the Trailer itself. Looking like an intense thriller, ‘Roy’ looks to be about Arjun Rampal‘s Kabir, a filmmaker writing a story which is somehow connected to Ranbir Kapoor’s character of a mysterious thief, seen as romancing Jacqueline Fernandes’ Ayesha.

Jacqueline Fernandes is supposedly playing a double role here, which makes sense, because she’s seen romancing both men, unless there’s more to the story than what they’re showing in the Trailer. ‘Roy’ to me gives off a vibe of a meta fiction psychological thriller. I mean that I think filmmaker Kabir is fictionalizing the story of Ranbir’s character and his relationship with Fernandes for a movie, as the entire Trailer has him writing at a typewriter, and the tagline of ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ appears once as well.

I’ll theorize right now that Ranbir Kapoor is a figment of Kabir’s imagination who he makes up and draws parallels from his own relationship with Fernandes’ character, to fill in the blanks, using her as his muse for a movie. Another explanation is that Kapoor’s character is her criminal ex boyfriend, whose story and her past Kabir exploits for his own purposes, but that storyline would tread a little too closely to last year’s ‘Kick’although, Fernandes does mention making a story of her life in the Trailer. Maybe it’s a combination of the two theories.

Regardless, ‘Roy’ is definitely one of those Trailers that is intriguing and has obviously caused me to theorize like a run away train. Despite the middle of the Trailer which becomes a typical Bollywood romance with soulful songs and all, the Trailer is effective in piquing interest and raising eyebrows. We’ll only find out the truth when the movie is released on February 13th, 2015.
