Trailer Talk: NOVEMBER 2015 – Danger, Dogs, Dinosaurs, Debauchery & Damn Good Drama
The winter movie season begins now. Get ready for an onslaught of Christmas themed movies, and other mishmash of genres in a month. But for now, we still have to get through the Middle Child of Halloween and Christmas in November, which doesn’t seem to have that many heavy releases, but still some fun and exciting ones to look forward to.
Check out this month’s Trailer Talk for the most exciting movies of November 2015, and be sure to let me know which movie you’ll be watching in theaters this month.
SPECTRE (November 6th, 2015)
The new Bond franchise, with Daniel Craig in the suit, has been seemingly diving into the origins of the character itself. While mostly known for a spy and adventure thrillers, this Craig-era is cutting real deep! ‘Spectre’ brings back a fan favourite villain, and gets a little deeper into the James Bond mythology.
Personally, I prefer the character of Bond getting more depth. It makes me watch the subsequent Bond films, and treat them as sequels. Whereas the other films, almost every single one of them, can be seen as standalone adventures with no connection to the larger Bond Universe except for the nostalgia attached to the character.
THE PEANUTS MOVIE (November 6th, 2015)
Finally, a live action version of the famed animated series featuring the lovable Snoopy. While the original creator has passed away, this little comic holds a lot of nostalgia and importance for many, and it will be interesting to see how good or bad this movie does in theaters.
While I only have a passing familiarity with the adventures of Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang, this is definitely a movie that I would take the kids to watch.
SPOTLIGHT (November 6th, 2015)
After his insane comeback and subsequent Oscar win with ‘Birdman‘, Michael Keaton returns in a more low key movie, but featuring an all star cast. A story about a group of journalists uncovering some high profile thing, looks intensely dramatic and engaging as hell! The movie features the amazing Rachel McAdams, last seen on ‘True Detectuve‘ Season 2, as well as Hulk itself, Mark Ruffalo. They’re joined by Liev Shreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Billy Crudup and a host of others.
With the success of ‘The Newsroom’ on HBO, I’m very interested in ‘Spotlight‘, because it also gives me a very ‘The Normal Heart’ sort of visual vibe.
TRUMBO (November 6th, 2015)
The end of ‘Breaking Bad’, doesn’t seem to have affected Bryan Cranston at all. While only having done supporting roles thus far in movies like ‘Godzilla‘ and ‘Argo‘, Cranston gets to shine in ‘Trumbo‘ as a Hollywood screenwriter, blacklisted for his political beliefs in 1940’s America.
The film has Cranston carrying the entire story, and from the Trailers thus far, he looks as charismatic as he does intense and amazing.
BY THE SEA (November 13th, 2015)
Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial film pits (pun very much intended) her against real life husband Brad Pitt, in a story about a married couple in the 70’s slowly drifting apart from one another. The movie looks to be very emotionally moving and has a lot of quiet angst that Jolie seems to direct very well, given by her previous directorial film, ‘Unbroken‘.
This kind of emotionally driven film is not really my scene, however if I was to watch, I would only do so due to the lead pair, which I’m sure is how a lot of people will react initially to this movie.
THE NIGHT BEFORE (November 20th, 2015)
[ WARNING: Red Band Trailer. NSFW ]
This is basically a trio of unlikely actors coming together for a silly slobber knocker of a Christmas movie. Friends having one last hurrah is the premise of this film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, (‘The Walk‘) Anthony Mackie, (‘Pain And Gain’) and Seth Rogen (‘Steve Jobs‘). While Rogen is not unfamiliar to this kind of a movie, Gordon-Levitt was last seen in an all out comedy back in 2011, also with Rogen, in ‘50/50′, by the same director.
Not one for slapstick comedies, I always like it when a dramatic actor tries something outrageously funny. As a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I will definitely be watching this. But on-demand.
LEGEND (November 20th, 2015)
Period gangster dramas have a spotty track record at the box office. While ‘Untouchables‘ won Oscar gold, ‘Public Enemies’ bombed, and hard. ‘Legend‘ decides to spread the wealth by having the two lead characters, be the same guy. Tom Hardy plays twin gangsters, with different sexualities and ‘Legend‘ is a bio-pic about real life mobsters, the Krays.
Despite the iffy period setting, the Trailer makes the movie look very watchable. Tom Hardy in both roles looks sweet, and the twin stuff alone is going to be intriguing, even more so if the actual screenplay and direction is also good. This movie looks to be mad cray-cray. (Tell me you didn’t see that coming.)
THE GOOD DINOSAUR (November 27th, 2015)
After the emotional spectacle that was ‘Inside Out’, just a few months later, Disney-Pixar gives us, what looks to be another epic and emotional story about a cute little neanderthal boy and his dinosaur friend. Set in pre-historic times, the Trailer doesn’t reveal a story beyond the adventures of these two characters, but it’s good enough to be completely hooked.
From the Trailer, it looks like this will be another Disney-Pixar movie that we watch for the kids, but end up blubbering ourselves at the high emotional drama it presents. Yes, that happened once. If you didn’t cry in the first 10 minutes of ‘Up‘, then you’re just cold, man.
CREED (November 27th, 2015)
A franchise continues its legacy with a spin off of a supporting character with ‘Creed‘. A movie about Appolo Creed’s son that looks to return to the foundations on which Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Rocky‘ series was founded looks to be much awaited for both the veteran actor, as well as newcomer Michael B Jordan.
You can find my more in depth Trailer breakdown of ‘Creed‘ here.
VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN (November 27th, 2015)
Remakes and adaptations are all the rage for the last few years now. So in that vein, ‘Victor Frankenstein’ re-tells the story of the enigmatic doctor and his attempts to create life out of death. But this is probably the first time we see Igor, his assistant, played by Daniel Radcliffe, along for the ride.
While the story is nothing new, the appeal to me here is seeing these two actors on screen together. McAvoy is always amazing and Radcliffe has blossomed (yep) into a pretty decent actor in his old(er) age. Plus who doesn’t want to see Proffesor Xavier and Harry Potter make monsters?!
