Trailer Talk: JULY 2015 (Bollywood Edition)
Bollywood has a full slate for movies releasing in July 2015. With the summer movie season kicking off, let’s take a look at all the Bollywood films releasing this month. Be sure to let me know which movie you’re most looking forward to this month!
GUDDU RANGEELA (July 3rd, 2015)
While ‘Jolly LLB’ may not have been commercially successful, it was an ambitious attempt by all. The same writer / director releases ‘Guddu Rangeela’ this July with Arshad Warsi and Amit Sadh, who was exceptional in ‘Kai Po Che’. (my Review here). The movie is about two wedding singers, who are manipulated into committing a kidnapping, where the kidnapee may be someone who has a personal connection to the two. The movie looks like a mixed bag of comedy and some drama. Warsi is best when he’s being genuine and trying not to be funny, which is how he is here, and it seems to provide some sincere comedy between himself and Sadh.
‘Guddu Rangeela’s highlight has to be the fact that Ronit Roy plays the antagonist. The inclusion of an actor with the caliber of talent as Roy, makes this movie something to be very excited for.
SECOND HAND HUSBAND (July 3rd, 2015)

With a premise of a relationship hinging on a divorce, that’s hinging on the current husband finding an elderly wealthy man for his future ex-wife, ‘Second Hand Husband’ looks like the epitome of B-Grade cinema from the Indian Industry. It’s surprising to see a veteran actor like Dharmendra in such a movie, but the movie tries to be humorous in a way that is both cheesy and cliche’d, and will quite possibly also be offensive to women.
BAAHUBALI (July 10th, 2015)
Being touted as India’s largest and most expensive motion picture ever, ‘Baahubali‘ is a fantasy adventure that is one of the biggest for the industry. The film features one of the largest VFX teams and looks visually equivalent to the scale of the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ movies. While the trailer doesn’t provide any details regarding the storyline or premise, it looks to be an epic adventure with some strong, albeit, overdone performances. The film features recognizable faces like Rana Daggubati (‘Baby’, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’) and Tamannah (‘Himmatwala’) as well as a cameo appearance by Sudeep (‘Rann’).
I LOVE NY (July 10th, 2015)
With the success of Rangana Ranaut’s films like ‘Queen‘ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, a long delayed film is being released to capitalize on her rise. Co-Starring Sunny Deol, ‘I Love NY’ is about one mad cap adventure on New Year’s Eve between two strangers. The trailer doesn’t provide a good enough idea of how or what causes them to meet, or even stay in each other’s life, but goes into love story mode with a melancholy song and sad-ness. The film doesn’t look too dated, but doesn’t offer anything new from either actor, and may actually be a step down, for Ranaut, given the body of work she’s done since making this film.
BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN (July 16th, 2015)

The traditional Salman Khan starrer releasing on Eid this year, will be the long awaited ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. The trailer makes the film look like a fun loving adventure of Salman Khan-like proportions, with a cute child as well as some toe tapping songs as well. Seeming more like an action comedy than the usual Salman super hero movies of physics defying dramatic action, (more on that here) ‘Bajrangi…’ looks to be an entertaining family friendly movie with less antics and more misunderstandings.
AISA YEH JAHAAN (July 24th 2015)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tC7wgEAna0
Fast becoming known as Indian first carbon neutral film, ‘Aisa Yeh Jahaan’ looks like it deals with multiple things from child rearing, environmental issues, as well as domestic racism within India. The movie starring the lead singer of the hindi-rock band Euphoria, Dr. Palash Sen (‘Filial’) and Ira Dubey, daughter of Lilete Dubey in the lead roles with, what looks to be, a brief appearance by Yashpal Sharma (‘Lagaan’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’. The film seems very revolutionary with storylines that have thus far never been tackled within the Indian Film Industry. With a writer / director that’s making his debut with the film, it’s getting international acclaim and awards.
BANGISTAN (July 31st, 2015)
Quite possibly the most commercially mainstream Bollywood comedy regarding terrorism and religious warfare, ‘Bangistan’ pits two terrorists from opposing religions against each other on a mission that is exactly the same. The Trailer offers some pretty smart juxtaposing of comedy at the expense of potential terrorist, and the premise seems to be a huge metaphor for the similarities between warring religions out to destroy each other. Produced by Farhan Akthar’s Excel Entertainment, the movie stars Riteish Deshmukh (‘Heyy Babyy’) and Pulpit Samrat (‘Fukrey’).
DRISHYAM (July 31st, 2015)
‘Drishyam’ marks the first time in a long time that Ajay Devgn has returned to a mroe dramatic film, in contrast to the masala potboilers that he’s been engaging in the last few years. Making his name in films like ‘Omkara’ and ‘Gangaajal’, Devgn has mostly done comedies or all out action films. ‘Drishyam’ is a large franchise with the movie being remade multiple times in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. A tout thriller, this movie looks to be one of the more engaging films of the month.
