Tom Holland Is All Of Us In First ‘SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING’ Footage
Now, I’m not one to throw around millennial expressions as click bait headlines for articles. So when I say that ‘Tom Holland is all of us’, I very much mean that. The way the upcoming actor is being utilized within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a direct nod to fans and life long comic book enthusiasts the world over.
Take a look at the first official footage from ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.
In what looks like a viral marketing tease hinting at a bigger reveal later on, this very short video is exciting and fun for all the right reasons. The video, shot almost from Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) POV showcases how Parker gets an updated Spider-Man suit from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who is not featured in the teaser.
Let’s rewind a bit. The a new version of the web-slinging character of Spider-Man, Marvel’s flagship character in the comics, was introduced during the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’. He was taken under the wing of Stark, given a new suit and was joined by the other veteran heroes of the wolrld in one of the better action set pieces of the franchise. Spinning off of that appearance, the character will now be seen in his own film, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’
While we’ve seen many iterations of Spider-Man on the big screen, there is a key distinction between those portrayals and that of Tom Holland, the latest actor to don the Spider suit. And that distinction very simply is that Tom Holland is us.
Holland is a very young actor entering this massive juggernaut of a franchise, for what everyone hopes will be a really long time. The version of Spider-Man that he plays, is in a similar life situation, joining a veteran team of superheroes attempting to match step with them in a world where he’s got a lot to prove. It’s the perfect meta depiction of a character, as Spider-Man himself was seen fan-boying during certain scenes in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, gushing over seeing his favorite heroes in person.
Which is basically us right? We’re living in a time where all our favorite comic book characters are being brought to life on screen in front of us. Taking on larger than life monsters and creatures, while also tackling the every day mundane and moral issues that we personally know all too well. No matter what level of criticism we deem to offer, through our blogs and social media handles, at the end of the day, we’re all still watching every superhero film, excited to see childhood brought to life, and giggling excitedly during it all. Much like Holland during this teaser.
Holland’s real life excitement and depiction of a character who feels the same way, is all kinds of genuine and heartwarming to watch. You can’t help but already find this young man (actor and character) appealing due to his complete giddiness at existing within this universe in the first place, and being part of this franchise.
The full ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ trailer should be releasing sometime this week.
