The 4 Most Anticipated Movies Of JANUARY 2018
The new year brings with it brand new slate of movies that threaten to divide our allegiances, or clean out our wallets. With so many movies coming out every month, I thought it’d be best to do a monthly round up of all the new movie trailers, for movies releasing that month, so we can better distinguish the ones worth our attention.
January 2018 is a light month, with not a lot of major tentpole studio films coming out. But as the year goes on, we’ll definitely get more of the blockbusters as well. However, there’s is a smattering of interesting films that could be worth a watch.
Here are the most anticipated movies of January 2018.
‘Paddington 2’ (January 12, 2018)
With the first film ‘Paddington’ being such a surprise hit, the sequel has been long anticipated by family friendly audiences. The mix of silly and smart humour made the film go beyond the typical kiddy movie.
The sequel seems to bring back the same blend of humour, but with a bigger story and a lot more celebrity appearances. With Hugh Grant and Brandon Gleeson seemingly being a huge part of the sequel, ‘Paddington 2’ looks to be one of the more kid-friendly films of January 2018, and is one of those movies that the entire family can enjoy.
‘Proud Mary’ (January 12, 2018)
With Taraji P. Henson making a splash on the critical scene for years now, with movies like ‘Hidden Figures’ and TV Shows like ‘Empire’, it’s about damn time she made a commercially blockbuster movie that shows off her range, both physical and emotional.
‘Proud Mary’ feels like an updated ‘Jackie Brown’ for a new generation with a lot more shine and polish being added to an existing genre. Henson looks incredible in multiple avatars, and seems just as at ease with massive amounts of guns as she kicks ass through the trailer, as she has been in her Oscar nominated role. Here’s hoping that this launches Henson into a rare group of women that have kicked butt on screen.
’12 Strong’ (January 19, 2018)
The true story of the first volunteer soldiers after the attacks on September 11, 2001, comes to the big screen for the first time with ’12 Strong’. The film is apparently the true story of these soldiers that has been de-classified, 16 years after its occurrence. A small contingency of soldiers against an insurmountable number of enemy combatants, and the triumph of will over odds, is what the movie seems to be about. The story seems to be intercut between the soldiers and their family life.
The film stars some heavyweights such as Chris Hemsworth, Michael Pena, Michael Shannon, William Fichtner and ‘Moonlight’ alum, Trevante Rhodes. I am interested in seeing what Rhodes has to offer beyond ‘Moonlight’. While the 1st Trailer itself looks incredibly underwhelming, the 2nd trailer (above) ups the ante and provides a more riveting story with proper tension in the right moments. The trailer also gives a much better idea of the plot, than the first trailer.
The story of a small group of underdogs overcoming ridiculously intense odds is a story that is massively appealing to all kinds of audiences. While it’s Director Nicolai Fuglsig’s first major directorial debut, the film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, whose wheelhouse this is definitely in.
‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ (January 26, 2018)
Watch both ‘Maze Runner’ movies on iTunes.
The third and final part of the ‘Maze Runner’ franchise concludes in January 2018. After many delays with the production due to the injury of lead actor Dylan O’Brien, the film is finally releasing, and it looks to be a massively satisfying conclusion.
After the events of the first two films that saw the rag tam team of kids trying to uncover the mystery of their world, the final film looks poised to reveal everything and bring the story to a close. With a bigger story and what looks like a much bigger some, the ‘Death Cure’ should be another satisfying end to one of the better young adult franchises out there.
That concludes our most anticipated movies of January 2018. Be sure to let me know which movie this month that you’re most looking forward to, either in the comments below, or on Twitter @theshahshahid
