SPEEDY SINGHS – Preview
First of all, there’s a bit of confusion with the name of this movie. Earlier titled BREAKAWAY, the film is now SPEEDY SINGHS. Although, you wouldn’t know the change from IMDB. But I digress…
Like I said before, I usually preview films that have so far eluded my sight, maybe due to being low budget, not enough marketing or so on. SPEEDY SINGHS is such a movie. I came across the music video just recently and was kind of blown away. For a few reasons actually.
The Music Video: At first I thought this was yet another, trying-to-be-cool-with-the-spotlights-in-the-background, with some cheesy as hind-hop bullshit kinda movie trailer song. Then I noticed someone who resembled Akshay Kumar (bad ass successful Bollywood actor). Not having seen any previews of any of his films in a few months (yea… that’s considered too long to NOT to a movie in Bollywood), I was intrigued. Along with him were some other young Indian kids with the 4 day old stubble doing the cool RESERVOIR DOGS walk with shades and all.
The song continued, and actually was not a bad song. It’s a kick ass song really! Then came the second thing that kinda blew my mind. There was this skinny Black guy doing the hip hop verses of the song (it’s the thing in Bollywood these days). It’s Ludacris. LUDA!!! The song is pretty damn cool, composed by Ludacris and RDB. Oh and some artist named Drake is in it too apparently. The music video did its job. I was hyped. So I Googled the shit outta this movie.
The movie itself: SPEEDY SINGHS is a story set in Toronto, Canada (shout out to my peeps!) about an Indian-Canadian guy with dreams of becoming a pro Hockey player, along with his band of Singhs. His hopes clash with his traditionally Indian background and basically is what the story is about. Like any sports movie, this features an ensemble cast, the cool coach Rob Lowe!!, some stereotypical elements of culture and tradition, or so I assume. I mean Anupam Kher’s (BEND IT LIKE BEKHAM) in it, in his full on Punjabi look, telling his son to stop playing Footba– I mean, Hockey. The trailer makes it seem pretty fuckin’ hilarious actually.
The makers: It’s interesting as hell that this movie’s got some strong backing. Produced by Akshay Kumar and Paul Gross (MEN WITH BROOMS, PASSCHENDAELE), it’s directed by Robert Lieberman. The director is the same dude that did D3: THE MIGHTY DUCKS, along with the director of a episodes for a shitload of TV shows like DEXTER, NIKITA, EUREKA and even THE X-FILES. The cast is pretty impressive as well. Not counting the new guys, SPEEDY SINGH’s got Rob Lowe!! Did I mention that? Oh, and also Russell Peters, Anupam Kher, Akshay Kumar (probably a special appearance) and some random chicks who’ve done some small time Hollywood films as well.
I’m stoked, and will definitely be checking out SPEEDY SINGS when it releases September 30th, 2011.
