SHAANDAAR (2015) Trailer: The Director of QUEEN’s Extravagant Next Movie
After a power packed performance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Haider’ last year, Shahid Kapoor returns with a more commercially conventional Bollywood story, featuring major stars and catchy tunes. Being in the news recently for releasing a teaser poster prior to an official poster, prior to its full Trailer, ‘Shaandaar’ stars Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor as the main leads, in a bubbly and family-centric film that looks to be very breezy and fun. The trailer initially pokes fun the typical dream-like Bollywood sequences, before kind of-sort of becoming something similar. Check out the official trailer below and read on for how ‘Shaandaar’ is going to be worth watching.
‘Shaandaar’s plot looks to be nothing wholly original; A destination wedding sees the introduction of a dashing wedding planner, Jagjinder Joginder (Shahid Kapoor) into the lives of the family of the bride-to-be, members of whom include Alia (Alia Bhatt) and, presumably her father, (Pankaj Kapur) as misadventures, shenanigins and (one would assume) love ensues in this romantic family film. The trailer keeps things light by focusing on the comedic elements of the film, and foregoes the obligatory dramatic turn that the trailers to most Bollywood love stories feature. ‘Shaandaar’ also marks the first time that real life father and son duo of Pankaj Kapur and Shahid Kapoor appear in a movie together. Previously Shahid acted in his father’s directorial venture ‘Mausam’, which failed at the box office. A huge chunk of the trailer does showcase their interaction together, mostly in a hilariously adverserial capacity.
Directed by Vikas Bahl, known more recently for his critically and commercially successful ‘Queen’, ‘Shaandaar’ also features a script written by Bahl himself and his ‘Queen’ collaborator, Chaitally Parmar. The movie is backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, as well as Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films, which also co-produced ‘Queen‘ as well. This would be the first time that Kapoor and Bhatt have been paired together. While Bhatt’s character doesn’t seem much different from her previous roles, this is Kapoor’s return to a more mainstream look and story after the remake of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet‘ last year. ‘Shaandaar‘ also sees the return of Sanjay Kapoor, in what looks to be a comedic role.
on the sets of ‘shaandaar’
‘Queen‘ had moments of sweetness, sadness, and cute family scenes which were just effective enough to never bog down the story with melodrama. (My full Review here) ‘Shaandaar‘ seems Vikas Bahl’s attempt to explore more of those moments in a movie that sounds typically Bollywood. Given the director and writer’s previous work, as well as both Shahid Kapoor and father Pankaj Kapur uniting on screen for the first time, despite both being in the industry for years, gives hope that the story of the movie was unique enough for them to be a part of it.
‘Shaandaar’ releases October 22nd, 2015. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Pankaj Kapur & Sanjay Kapoor. Directed by Vikas Bahl.
