Movie Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM (2012) – Redefining ‘Cartoon’ Movies.

Published by Shah Shahid on

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: The DC Animated Universe movies, are 10 times better than the Live Action adaptation of comic book movies that are all the rage now. Everything from the voice performers, story, and writing… are perfect in these ‘cartoons’. One such Animated Movie comes as JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM.

Rating:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

The story centers on the entire Justice League of America, which is DC Comics’ flagship group of all its major characters in a team. (for those uninitiated into the Comics world). The JLA consists of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern & Martian Manhunter. The team has many more characters through out the DC Universe, not to mention many different versions and sub teams. However, this is the core team.

In DOOM, we see each of these characters being targeted based on their powers and personalities by a big baddy with plans of world domination, through world destruction. It’s a great riveting story that sees each of our favorite characters, become immobilized and hit where it hurts the most.

The voice performers consist of Tim Daly as Superman, Michael Rosenbaum (better known as Lex Luthor from SMALLVILLE) as The Flash, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern. This cast is the regular cast of all DCAU Films, and they’re awesome… again!

The pacing of this film is amazing, and the shocking realism and brutality at times, make me forget that I’m watching an Animated flick, and not live action. Because believe me, the story and execution is so well done, that if not for the short run time, this would’ve made an amazing live action film.

The animation this time around isn’t as great as the other DCAU Films like BATMAN: UNDER THE HOOD, but it’s a minor complaint. The performances + action kept my mind off of it.

The story is the greatest thing about this film. The late Dwayne McDuffie, a legend in Comics and the DCAU, wrote this, his last piece ever. And it leaves a great legacy for him, as this story is better than some of the live action film plots. The action, set up and pacing never let down!

Even the ending is awesome and unexpected for an Animated Film. One of the greatest things about the DCAU is that they can capitalize on the existing Universe set up with the animated films, and start a story mid pace, with all the characters back stories set up. No need for pesky Origin stories. However, that’s not to say that a new audience will be lost. JUSTICE LEAGUE DOOM serves as a standalone film for any new comers watching, and also enhances the experience for the typical Fan Boy as well. It’s a great blend of both worlds.
