Movie Review: ‘Gully Boy’ Has Gone From Being A Movie To A Movement
I almost exclusively listen to Hindi songs simply because something about the lyrics speaks to me. Not sure why. Maybe growing up with Desi songs gets more of an emotional response than other languages. Which is kind of the big reason why I’ve never gotten into the Hip Hop genre as much. But the arrival of the latest Bollywood movie, Gully Boy, changes all of that. Kind of.
Gully Boy is the first Bollywood movie that chronicles the rise to fame of a rapper, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The movie is an inspirational and extremely gritty look at how self expression can lead the way to confidence and self respect. It’s an amazingly moving film that examines the life of a Muslim boy named Murad, played by Singh, leads to his journey towards gaining independence and courage to make something better of his life.
The movie introduces us to another amazing actor in Siddhant Chaturvedi, as well as a variety of amazing Indian rappers, artists, and brand new voices that I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing more of in the industry.
