MADLY (2015) Trailer: Anurag Kashyap Works With ALICE IN WONDERLAND Actress & Others

Published by Shah Shahid on

Anurag Kashyap has been known to take a lot of flack for his unique and quirky choice of films, that don’t always resonate with critics or audiences. This is even more true after his most recent commercial box office massacre that was ‘Bombay Velvet’.I like Kashyap as a filmmaker. I’ve been accused of liking him unconditionally, which isn’t entirely accurate. I admire him as a filmmaker, because he experiments, and pushes the boundaries of what is usually considered mainstream Bollywood or Hindi Language Films.

In an industry that is very set in its ways, when even ‘groundbreaking’ is just a rehash of existing concepts, filmmakers like Kashyap are very much appreciated, despite his experiments not always being a success. One such experiment comes in the form of ‘Madly’.

Check out the Trailer at the link below and read on to find out exactly what ‘Madly‘ is all about.

This time around, Kashyap is part of an international experiment. As can be seen, ‘Madly‘ is an anthology style movie about the varying ways the concept of love can be expressed. Physical, emotional, visceral are all forms of expressive love that is explored in ‘Madly‘, by different segments of stories directed by directors from all over the world, some of whom are very familiar for international audiences. While others… not so much.

Anurag Kashyap’s segment is obviously Indian, and starring Radhika Apte, most recently seen in ‘Manjhi: The Mountain Man’ and the short film ‘Ahalya’ . His segment explores the life of an unhappily married woman and her exploration of love with a younger man.

Gael Garcia Bernal is the Mexican hearthrob that was a media darling back in the 2000’s. Best known for starring ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’, and recently starred in Jon Stewart’s directorial debut ‘Rosewater’. Bernal writes, directs and stars in his segment of ‘Madly’.

Natasha Khan is a British filmmaker who is also part of ‘Madly’, featuring another story that deals with a variation of love. Sebastian Silva is a Chilean filmmaker, known in Hollywood for the Michael Cera starrer ‘Crystal Fairy & The Magic Cactus’. Silva is another one of the directors for a segment of ‘Madly’.

Japanese director Shion Sono is by no means a young filmmaker, like the others on this project. A veteran filmmaker and poet, Sono’s segment is probably the most interesting and messed up, to be honest. The segment seems to feature love as explored as a communal thing, with the characters being introduced to sexual orgies and group sex. Probably the explicit of the stories, I assume, not having seen the film.

The last director of ‘Madly‘ has a major Hollywood connection, having just this month starring in the Guillermo Del Toro directed ‘Crimson Peak’, best known for her role as Alice in upcoming sequel ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’. Mia Wasikowska is an Australian actress and director who rounds out the filmmakers involved in ‘Madly’.

I’m sure that ‘Madly’ is not going to be super successful from a commercial perspective, giving people more ammunition against Kashyap. But it’s hard to admit that it’s an interesting concept and a pretty big departure from the commercial film arena, something that Kashyap does often.

Share your thoughts on the… somewhat explicit trailer of ‘Madly’.
