Movie Review: SUCKER PUNCH (2011) – Mindless Destructive Fun

Published by Shah Shahid on

Zack Snyder is awesome for 2 reasons. 300 & WATCHMEN. Sure, WATCHMEN was a li’l meh, but still, it was probably the best adaptation of that story that anyone could’ve done. Another reason Snyder MAY be even more awesome is his upcoming Superman movie, MAN OF STEEL. But before that, yet another of his big time major comic adaptation, he gives us something more simpler in the form of SUCKER PUNCH.

Rating: 3 Out Of 5 Stars

The one very creatively done aspect of SUCKER PUNCH is the opening montage. Two orphaned girls’ sick mother dies, leaving everything to them instead of the step father. Evil step daddy loses his shit and tries to hurt the youngest kid, which is when elder sister Babydoll steps in and tries to kill him, accidentally killing her own little sister whose live she was trying to save. I didn’t expect a concept like irony in this movie either… but I digress. This entire sequence was a montage of scenes, with no dialogue and heavy rock in the background, Snyder Style. Very cool.

OK. I’ve spent too much of this review discussing everything else. So let’s get into it.

Ginormous Samurais of stone (I think) with rocket launchers take on a Katana and gun wielding Babydoll in the first fight sequence that destroys a monastery. AWESOME!

kaboom!! tee hee

A group of hot-ass babes, equipped with automatic rifles and swords, axes, daggers take on a Nazi army of mechanized Zombies while Zeppelins and Mech Drones battle it out in the skies overhead. FUCKING AWESOME!!

Mechs and Hotties… and Violence… and Zombies…

Same group of girls then fight their way through rabid Orcs to get to a tower and extract magic fire rubies from the esophagus of a baby Dragon. And yes, there is a mommy Dragon who’s pissed outta her mind. Cue action sequence with high flying acrobatics involving a fucking Dragon chasing a Bomber Plane!!! Do I even need to say it again?!

That’s it. That, is SUCKER PUNCH in a nutshell. Fast forward all the talking and the scenes establishing the premise and the storyline and just watch the most jaw droppingly awesome mash up of live action/CGI action sequences that you will ever see… EVER!!

kind of agree with you, it really does cleanse the pallet of CGI justice 🙂

The three word review encapsulates this movie perfectly. “Complete disappointment” would also work.
