GAME OF THRONES (2015) – S05E01: ‘The Wars To Come’ Review

After a long wait, ‘Game of Thrones’ returns to television marking the fifth season of the series. Keep in mind that SPOILERS follow for ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5 Episode 1, ‘The Wars To Come’

The first episode resolves a lot of cliffhangers from the finale last season. We see Lena Headey’s Cersei Lannister recalling a childhood memory where a witch pretty much says her queendom will be taken over by Margerie Tyrell played by Natalie Dormer. Which makes sense now because Cersei always hated her. We also see how different her relationship with her brother has become compared to the first season. Cersei blames Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jamie for indirectly killing their father, which I’m sure will hinder their incestuous, uh..activities. Cersei takes notice of her cousin Lancel who now is a part of the major religion in Westeros, The Faith of the Seven. I have a feeling that religion will play a big part in this season because this episode overall carries a sort of underlying religious tone.

Game Of Thrones Season 5 Episode 1 Review

This is seen when the shot moves on to Slavers Bay where the Unsullied remove a large Golden Harpy statue, which then crashes from the top of the pyramid to the ground (kind of like a fallen angel). It appears that there’s a resistance group named The Sons of the Harpies, who are against Emlia Clarke’s Daenarys and her movement. I really hope her character develops a lot more this season because after destroying Astapor, the Queen Of Dragons has been the queen of stagnant plot development. Daario Naharis was the only enjoyable development in her story line last season and with good reason! He suggests Daenarys reopen a fighting pit where slaves used to fight to the death, which makes her move to visit the only interesting thing about her: her dragons. But obviously they wanted to burn the crap out of her, I mean how would you feel if your mom just locked you in a small dark room with no food and two other people?

In Pentos, Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion is let out a box he was being carried in by Varys and they’re both very relieved. The best line in this entire episode was “ ‘Do you know what it’s like to stuff your shit through one of those airholes?’ says Tyrion. ‘No I only know what its like to pick up your shit and throw it overboard’.” Varys reveals something that he wants, something a lot of us secretly wanted, when Daenarys went from just a Khaleesi to the Mother of Dragons–her sitting on the Iron Throne. But clearly after season 3 it’s inexplicably clear how poor of a ruler she is. They decide to make their way to make this proposition to her which I think will be very interesting because it’ll be the first time Daenarys’ storyline crosses with another character who we’ve been following.

Back at the Wall, Kit Harington’s Jon continues to train recruits for the Nights’ Watch until he is summoned by the Red Witch to talk to Stannis who wants Jon to persuade Mance Rayder to move the wildlings to fight for StannisJon tries and fails. Mance declines the offer so he’s put on the pyre but before he can burn to death, Jon shoots him with an arrow and gives him a quick death. I’ve got a feeling that sometime this season Jon will be offered the position as the next Lord Commander even though he does literally everything a member of the Night’s Watch shouldn’t do, but with Stannis now in the picture I think he’ll pull some strings and Jon will be finally rewarded for all the things he’s done.
