Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is in DC’s Shazam!
I’ve always upheld that the former WWE Wrestler and now actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a great actor, in need of that one role of a lifetime that makes that fact recognizable to the mainstream. Now there might finally be a role that sees this happen, in the most awesome-est of ways possible.
Similar to Vin Diesel’s campaign to be in a Marvel film, first teasing to be Vision, then finally being cast as the voice of Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (My Review here) and then again, more recently teasing his role in an Inhuman’s film, The Rock has also been teasing one specific comic book movie involvement in recent times. Now, it finally seems like he’s confirmed this news.
Speaking to a Spanish language site known as La Nacion, it seems that The Rock has confirmed an upcoming Shazam movie:
It’s the interpretation of a character from DC Comics. It’s the story of Shazam, but I can’t say if I’m playing Shazam or Black Adam… In this case in particular, I believe we will do [the part] justice. I’m putting my heart and soul into this role.
This ultimately confirms two things. A) that there will be a movie based on the former Captain Marvel, now known as Shazam. And B) that the characters arch nemesis, Black Adam will also feature in said film. The Rock’s physique and look seems suitable to play either characters, but if the depictions stays true to the comic origins, Black Adam seems like a better fit, due to the character’s Egyptian background. Not that ethnicity factors in the casting of comic book films, considering how Kingpin was portrayed by the late Michael Duncan Clarke in DAREDEVIL and Michael B. Jordan will be playing Johnny Storm in the upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot.
Warner Bros and DC have been going on an onslaught of conceptualizing comic book films to expand their cinematic Universe, starting with BATMAN V. SUPERMAN in 2015 and continuing on towards a Justice League film. How a Shazam movie factors into all this, and if it will be part of the bigger Justice League movie, still remains to be seen.
Given that the news comes as a translation from a Spanish Language site, there may be room for error, however, if accurate, this would be the next big of news to be revealed about DC’s plans with their cinematic universe after news that an Aquaman script is currently in development. I for one am very excited at the prospect of The Rock taking on a mainstream comic book role, one that is part of a larger franchise.
